Changing things
After 6 years or so of maintaining my own droplet on Digital Ocean, I moved my site back to shared hosting. Not too long ago, I wrote about having to create a new droplet because the other one, the Ubuntu version became deprecated. The server kept having issues, one of them was that it kept accumulating MB’s and the memory leak kept getting worse.
Long story short, my website is now hosted with Halvar. A good shared hosting has become expensive over the years. Especially if you run a small non-profit weblog. I hope to have found a good match with Halvar. It’s a Dutch-based, small green web host. They provide several nice things such as WP Toolkit, Python, and Node.js. So I have options should I ever wish to move on from WordPress.
I contemplated moving from WordPress to a static site CMS like Hugo or a smaller CMS like Kirby. But I like the fact that my site has a hosted back-end, which means I don’t depend on my Macbook and all the tools needed to access a flat-file website. I already run two tiny static projects using WordPress static export. And it can be a hassle if I don’t have good backups.
Also, WordPress has become a beast compared to Kirby. But it’s a beast I know well enough to get things done fast. Now that I have used Gutenberg block editor for so long, I have gotten used to it, it does the job for me.
More random blogging
It has been years since I just randomly blogged about whatever. I felt like my weblog should be more “professional” even tho I started it in 2002, blogging about everything and nothing. I want to try going back to that. I will still post more serious things about inclusive design and accessibility, but I want to be more random here. I also still have my tiny newsletter that I have been writing monthly since 2015. It is an old-school form Livejournal style. About my ongoing life stuff and books, movies, shows.
Here is to hoping I will be motivated to write more about random things here that piques my curiosity.
